Miyagi, who is a second year student of Shohoku High is one of the fastest player in the team, and his capability of running and snatching the ball is as good as Mitsui. Miyagi is quite short compared to his other teammates (168cm), and he has this huge crush on Ayako. He was involved in a fight with Mitsui once, when he first entered Shohoku High. He was beaten up very badly and had since been in hospital and never came back to Shohoku until a year after that.

Miyagi and Sakuragi once fought with each other when Miyagi thought that the redhead was trying to woo Ayako. They fought again that evening in the basketball court, but both finally stopped when Akagi came in and punched their heads. Later that night, after practise, Sakuragi and Miyagi had sort of a man-to-man talk about love, and the next day, they surprised everyone as they entered the basketball court like two old buddies. At the end of the manga series, it is revealed that Ryota would be the captain of Shohoku, replacing Akagi.
